Concept Selection and Research

The Focus Group has helped me to decide that the concept for the song "Demons" by Imagine Dragons will be what produce.
Demons - Imagine Dragons Lyrics
When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale
I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
At the curtain’s call
It's the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl
So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made
Don't wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don't wanna hide the truth
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go
Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside

The conventions of music videos from this genre are interpretive. Imagine Dragons other videos are prime examples of this, with the video for "Radioactive" being about an underground puppet fighting ring. Other examples include the band "American Authors" with their song "Best Day of my Life", in which a man goes on a drinking spree with a strange monster he met in the bar. This has influenced me to make my video an interpretive one to fit with this theme of the genre.
How I'll meet these conventions
Style: The video will be interpretive too, through the use of having the character's inner demons personification and symbology are open to interpretation on what/who they represent.
Costumes: There won't be any specific costumes (excluding the casual wear the main character will wear), apart from the face paint the "Copies" will bear. These will each be different to reflect a different emotion or feeling within the character's psyche.
Lighting: Dark and moody to reflect the theme and feeling of the song itself.
Locations: Though I will be filming in the simple location of a wooded area, it will represent the inside of the main character's head, of which he can't escape.
Shot Types: Lots of close-ups to focus on the face paint, and to make it clear that each of the characters with face paint are the same as the main character.

Target Audience Research
From these results, we can see that the typical people to listen to this music are 8-30 year old, predominantly male, students and fairly paid professionals. They would always watch music on YouTube, though occasionally on other websites like Spotify or Tidal, as well as buy CD's over other products. Some would be constantly buying/downloading music, though most would do it on occasion.

Market Reserach
Competition
The three main bands that Imagine Dragons competes with are the indie rock groups Bastille and American Authors, as well as the pop rock group One Republic. Similarly to Imagine Dragons, these bands have had a single song that became a huge hit that gave them notoriety. Imagine Dragons released "Radioactive" in 2012, which was followed by all these artists singles in the next year. Bastille had "Pompeii", American Authors had "Best Day of My Life" and One Republic released "Counting Stars".
Advertising Effectiveness
All these bands have had their music featured on TV in some way shape or form. Imagine Dragons have been featured on multiple chat shows including Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel, on which they performed their most popular hits. They have made guest appearances on shows such as "Impractical Jokers" and the first episode of "The Muppet Show" in 2015.
Most of the competitor's music has been featured on TV shows, with Bastille's songs appearing in "Made in Chelsea" and "Vampire Diaries". American Authors' songs have been in "Vampire Diaries" too as well as the trailers for the films "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "Earth To Echo". One Republic has had fewer TV spots, with the most well known one being their song "Love Runs Out" used as a promotional tool for the show "How to Get Away With Murder".
They all have social media sites on Facebook and Twitter, as well as a few others, along with their own websites.
Advertising Placement
The song "Demons" will be displayed on YouTube, as the TA research shows this is where most music is viewed. The research also suggests selling it on CD's could be an effective move, as the typical fan of Imagine Dragons would be more likely to buy through that medium.

Talent Research (Auditions)
Location Recces
Placement and Content
The music video will be uploaded to YouTube, as it has gained an enormous amount of popularity over the last half decade, which my TA research participants agree with. The option of CD's was also brought up as it is very popular amongst my TA, however it is quite costly and so wouldn't be viable. There are a few other options that I could take too, including DVD's and other music websites, but these are costly and aren't as popular to our TA than YouTube.
The concept I have created will work for the song because it is about our inner demons that no-one knows about, which is shown through the main character battling their darkest emotions, and it ending with someone asking if they are "ok?" with the response being "Yeah, I'm fine". It also resonates with the idea of closing yourself off to the world as you are scared your secrets will escape, which is represented by having an emotion being spotted at the end of the video in the real world.

Equipment and Facilities
The equipment that I will need for this production include the Sony NEX-5 camera and a tri-pod. The camera I own, but the tri-pod can be sourced from the media studio. The only facilities I will need will be in the editing stage, sourced though the college's Premiere Pro software on the computers.
